Kanpur: Manchester of the east

25 June 2015 Union cabinet announced the 100 smart cities project. In which they will focus to improve the quality of urban life by providing a clean and sustainable environment, affordable housing for poor, urban mobility and public transportation. According to population and area each state will be allocated a fixed number of smart cities.

Densely populated Uttar Pradesh will get 13 smart cities, and Kanpur is one of them. Kanpur , the largest city of UP and most populous in India. It is the second largest industrial city in North India. Also known as the “Leather City of the world” as it has some largest & finest tanneries. It is situated on the bank of River Ganga.

Today, Kanpur comprises Duncan industries, Hindustan aeronautics ltd., Dainik Jagran, Red chief shoes, Goldie spices and 500 world famous leather tanneries. So what problems is Kanpur facing? In a survey conducted by Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, Kanpur was the most polluted city of the state. The respiratory suspended particulate matter (RSPM) levels have exceeded 3 times than the limit. Lifeline of the city i.e river Ganga, considered to be even worse, as water level continuously falling and tanneries discharging the toxic effluent directly in it. Kanpur has poor quality of life and lack of political representation, urban planning, public amenities and citizen participation. Kanpur is suffering with economic pull of a metropolis. Bad electricity supply and poor road conditions in the city has added more to the pain. Industrialists could deliver even better output but the abrupt electric and water supply and poor road conditions decline their business output. When Kanpur is one of the biggest tax-paying cities in the state then why people are compelled to live in a sorry state.

What change would this project bring to the city. After the implementation of this project Kanpurites will get high-end information and communication technologies, to deliver better services and improve the overall living conditions of its residents. Power, water and other utilities will be monitored and managed for efficient usage. It will be equipped with smart solutions to commuting, automated security and surveillance systems and wi-fi powered open spaces. Employments will generates which result to decrease in Migration. People should understand that it’s their own city and they should maintain it.
